History:
Twilight Sparkle starts off the series in Canterlot, the capitol city, as the personal protégée of the ruler, Princess Celestia. It's an easy life for her, and she very much enjoys spending time with the Princess and with the books of Canterlot's many libraries. When she's sent to Ponyville to oversee preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration, and possibly stop the return of the evil Nightmare Moon, she meets five other ponies who would take on the role of the Elements of Harmony with her, and more importantly, become her very good friends. (And then they stop the return of the evil Nightmare Moon and turn her back into Princess Luna, no biggie.)

Twilight learns the value of friendship through her many adventures and the time she spends in Ponyville with her friends. It is, in fact, the main message of the series. After the incident with Nightmare Moon, she takes on "advanced studies" about the "magic of friendship," moving into Ponyville's library to stay close to her new friends. Since she spent all of her time studying (books) before that, every lesson she learns about friendship is completely new to her. Whether it's about keeping secrets, listening to everypony's side, or compromising, she is always learning new things about what it means to be a friend. And she tackles these lessons head-on.

Twilight’s adventures are mostly episodic (being… you know, a children’s cartoon.) She learns lessons and writes those lessons to her teacher, Princess Celestia. She still winds up in several prominent incidents regardless though, suchs when the embodiment of chaos and disharmony (aptly named Discord) is freed, and she and her friends have to return him to stone using the power of the Elements of Harmony. (He turns back to normal later and then good, but not by Twilight’s canonpoint.)

Twilight’s latest adventure was in putting on a play depicting the founding of Equestria, before she ended up being pulled into a magic castle called Paradisa...!

Twilight Sparkle arrived to Paradisa to find most of her friends already there: Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Spike, to be exact. She had the support of her friends as she discovered the castle had taken something from her- a price of admission, so to speak, and that price was her ability to read books. Being a bookworm, library-lover, and bibliophile of the umpteenth degree, this naturally caused a lot of problems for the pony, but one she worked through with her friends, who often read books to her. Having to ask her friends for help wasn't new, but having to rely on them so much was a change.

The loss wasn't the worst thing to happen to the pony in her stay at Paradisa, though. She dealt with the pain of losing ponies she cared for: not to death, thank Celestia, but many of her friends – Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and friends she made at the castle – went home. During a time when the castle gave her a filly to care for with Princess Luna, who arrived sometime after Twilight, the castle took that filly away as well. The castle even brought in her brother, Shining Armor, who had his memories of Twilight taken from him as his price. If that wasn't traumatic enough, just as Twilight felt she might make some progress with him, he left.

Suffice it to say, Twilight is wary of strange, magic castles. And since Paradisa existed by feeding off of its residents’ feelings, it was fine with that.

She also learned a lot about humans during her stay, seeing as how almost everypony wasn't, well, a pony. Ray Stantz taught her about human culture, and during strange times when the castle brought them to other places, Twilight even got to live as a human for a short while. She also learned about things like animal cruelty, horse riding, and chariot races, all of which she staunchly opposed. While lowering her opinion on humans overall, she still realized the majority are still good people at heart… just… culturally-misguided. She'd become something of a crusader for equestrian rights, too.

And then an ambiguous world change left the residents of Paradisa so collectively depressed that their feelings went over the despair event horizon, created a black hole, and destroyed the entire world Paradisa resided on. (No, really. That’s the ridiculous premise of Mostly Harmless okay.) She and Princess Luna were rescued by a passing spaceship, the Thor, which was something of a giant refugee ship for people whose worlds had been destroyed.

Aboard the Thor, she and Luna would get to spend time with old friends, including Princess Celestia. It was something of a new experience, as they partook in miscellaneous jobs on planets they went by, trying to earn money to rebuild Equestria (which was destroyed by the Four Ponies of the Apocalypse.) But! BUT! Twilight could read again, and she took great advantage of that, becoming the bookkeeper for the Magic Guild (run by Lemina Ausa) and reading every book she could get her hooves on.

She made more friends and deepened her relationship with her current friends. Princess Luna especially, with who she became far more casual and relaxed around, eventually sharing a room with her as well. But making friends was second nature to her, no matter how alien they were to her. Her experience with humans at Paradisa surely helped with that.

Starting in Paradisa and continuing through her time on the Thor, she expanded her studies from simply friendship to also include other cultures and creatures. She’s something of the pony expert on humanity and other aliens. This was especially notable when they landed on a university planet, where she received a doctorate in Astrofriendsociological Physicology. She’s very proud of that accomplishment, showing her dedication to the art of making friends with all sorts of creatures and the knowledge she’s accumulated over her time outside of Equestria.

Personality:
Twilight Sparkle is, to put it simply, a bit of a nerd. She genuinely loves to study, and at the start of the series, she even does so at the expense of anything resembling a social life. Early on, she seems to be a complete shut-in, shown to shun invitations to parties and hang out with other ponies. This prompts other ponies to say, "She cares more about books than friends." But she's genuinely a very intelligent pony, and she has a tremendous natural talent for both learning and magic. Even as the series progresses and she learns to appreciate friendship and spending time with her friends, she still loves to learn new things, challenge herself, and her main hobby will always be studying. Though through her adventures outside of Equestria, she does add to her interests in studying – she takes on the studying of foreign cultures and other sapient races with great gusto, going so far as to receive her doctorate in the study of them (and friendship.)

As mentioned earlier, she learns the value of friendship through her adventures in Ponyville. Eventually, she becomes something of the glue that holds the group together. On the other side of that issue, since Twilight is so new to the concept of friendship, though, she's still often making social blunders. She simply has no idea how to act in certain situations that might seem benign to anypony else. She often gets nervous, overanalyzing every social interaction she performs. How will they react to this? What if they think badly of me? What is somepony supposed to do here? She even reads books on social etiquettes and situations, and tries to follow the books to the letter. She simply has no clue what to do otherwise. This is most readily apparent in her first slumber party, where she literally decides every activity by following "Slumber Party 101," even consulting it when a tree falls through the window of her home. (Which is also a tree. Tree inside of a tree. Treeception.) This IS something that she becomes better at thanks to experience, but there are still moments where she has no idea what to do when it would be obvious to others thanks to such a large bulk of her life being without actual friends.

When it comes to her friends, Twilight has complete faith in them. Although it falters at times, whenever it's truly important, she knows she can count on her friends and their bond to one another. Especially after the incident with Discord, where her faith in them was shaken by the personification of disharmony himself, she's truly learned just how much she can count on them. She knows that she always has somebody she can turn to for help, and she knows the value of working together to achieve something she couldn't do on her own. She had a similar bond with Princess Celestia, her teacher for many years. It's shown that she has complete faith in her teacher, and the princess, in turn, has complete faith in her. It's almost a bragging point just how much they trust and care for each other. It should also be mentioned that her closest friend is, in fact, a dragon named Spike. She hatched him herself during her entrance examination for Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, and they've been together ever since- he operates as her assistant, and he's always there for her.

As can reasonably be pieced together from the above, Twilight is a very genuine pony. She's not prone to deception, and she's very kind and generous on top of that. She's always willing to lend a hoof to those in need. She places the highest value on friendship and the well-being of those around her, and doesn't hesitate even a moment to put herself in danger for others. She's not reckless, and does show fear at a great many times, but she always faces danger in spite of it, because it's the right thing to do. She's a noble pony, with courage and a heart of gold.

However, that's not to say that she's perfect. Her tone sometimes carries a bit of a bite to it that one might not expect of her. And she does often get frustrated, often seen around Pinkie Pie (who challenges her sensibilities,) and even angry at times. She's been known to snap, even at friends, though usually followed with an apology once she's cooled down. She has enough humility to admit when she's wrong, and is always willing to correct any mistakes she does make.

Twilight is also known to be rather stubborn when it comes to standing by her beliefs, even if she's wrong. This is most often seen when it comes to the completely supernatural – she refuses to believe in curses or Pinkie Pie's "pinkie sense," for example, even when the evidence is piling up, going to rather extreme lengths to try and provide an alternate explanation that fits her own worldview. But still, as mentioned above, she will admit she's wrong... once she's exhausted every other possible option and there is absolutely no way to deny it any longer. These sensibilities of hers are often challenged by the places she winds up, like Paradisa and the Thor, which operate in ways that defies all explanations of physics, science, and magic altogether. (Seriously, their spaceship ran off of an Improbability Drive what the hay!)

It should also be mentioned that Twilight Sparkle is hyper-organized. She's known for her good organizational skills, and often makes checklists for even the most benign tasks. Her organizational skills were made well-known during the winter wrap-up, where they helped save the town's reputation by getting the entire wrap-up done on time. They're not always a good thing, though: things that are disorganized can really get to her, and she refuses to accept anything other than the best from herself. The time when she was going to be late on an assignment, her troubles ended up enveloping the entire town as her panic led her to worse and worse decisions on how to handle the situation.

But still, she's a very good pony to have as a friend.

Abilities: In My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, all unicorns have the innate ability to use magic, although it is perfected and expanded upon by study. But their magic is usually only related to their "special talent." Twilight's special talent, however, is magic. As such, she exhibits a much wider range of abilities than other ponies, as well as having much more raw power.

The most benign use of her magic is psychokinesis, or moving objects with her power. As a pony, this came in obvious use since it was rather hard to grip anything. Almost every unicorn could do this much, using it to lift books, write, bake a cake, sew a dress, or whatever else they might need to do. Twilight, unlike most of those ponies, is strong enough to use this to repair broken dams, move water towers, lift monster bears even larger than said water towers, or even levitate large boulders (named Tom.)
Her magic has shown many other uses, such as teleporting (both herself and others,) growing mustaches, granting movement to objects, and even a spell that "fixes everything".... although that last spell failed. Also, she can materialize doors to slam in other ponies' faces. This is important.

Oh, and she can learn more spells by experimentation and studying. She loves to study. Just ask Princess Celestia, or Spike…

As for more mundane abilities, Twilight is an expert organizer, even able to organize the entire town of Ponyville in their efforts to clean up winter. She’s the de facto leader of her friends when the stakes are high as well.

In addition, she’s received a doctorate in Astrofriendsociological Physicology, which is the study of the physics and social effects of relationships, especially friendship, as experienced by differing species between differing planetary systems. So she’s an expert in friendship and aliens pretty much.

She also has a working knowledge of modern tech and future tech, thanks to her experiences at Paradisa and Mostly Harmless, that she doesn’t have in canon.

Finally, a note on what she’s bringing with her! From Paradisa, a picture of herself, Princess Luna, and Nine, and from Mostly Harmless, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. She’ll find some other items (her pets, Owlowiscious and Hoppip, and possibly her Element of Harmony) in some shops later.
